Obituary
Clifford W. Barnes, 96, of Bethalto passed away Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Cedarhurst of Bethalto with his family at his side.
He was born January 27, 1926 in Madison County, NE to Albert and Evelyn (Howell) Barnes. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 until 1946 during WWII. He married Mary Frances Skaggs, May 28, 1948 in Havana, IL. Clifford was retired from Shell Oil Company. He was a member of the Wood River Refinery Retirement Association and Friends of the Museum and the LoveJoy United Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of almost 74 years, Mary Frances Barnes of Bethalto; two daughters, Karen (Michael) Putnam of Wood River and Becky (Robert) Dempsey of Worden; five grandchildren, Christopher (Kelley) Putnam of Chesterfield, MO, Todd (Kelli) Dempsey of St. Louis, Craig (Erin) Putnam of Milton, MA, Laurie Putnam (Josh Crowell) of Osage Beach, MO and Kelli Dempsey (Jamal Gilbert-Boyd) of Chicago and five great grandchildren, Cameron Dempsey, Grace, Drew, Brant and Rylie Putnam.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and two brothers.
The family will hold a memorial service at 1 p.m. on April 30, 2022 at the LoveJoy United Presbyterian Church in Wood River. An inurnment will take place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at a later date. Cremation services entrusted to Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights.
